Avocadoes

Choose an avocado with the darkest skin (for its variety), hold it and gently squeeze.

If it has as much give as chilled butter, it's perfectly ripe. Squishy means it's overripe.

You can buy hard, under-ripe avocados and let them ripen at home. Store them in the fridge to prevent ripening, store them on the counter for slow ripening or put them in a paper bag to speed up the process.
